Sacked Egerton University vice-chancellor Rose Awuor Mwonya now faces arrest. Prof Mwonya was replaced by Isaac Kibwage as acting new vice-chancellor. Prof Kibwage has been deputy vice-chancellor administration, planning and development.
Many had expected Alexander Kahi, DVC academic affairs to be appointed in an acting capacity. However, sources within the council say Prof Kahi’s protracted war with Mwonya over who was responsible for a number of corruption cases being investigated at the university cost him. The Directorate of Criminal Investigation is probing cases that have seen the institution lose millions of shillings in dubious tender awards.
The university is also broke and unable to service loans and remit statutory deductions. Bockline Bebe, DVC research and extension is likely to be appointed to the office of administration, planning and development. Josiah Omolo who was appointed to the directorate of marketing and resource mobilization courtesy of embattled Mwonya has his future hanging on the balance.
Apart from Prof Omolo, other Mwonya orphans are Moses Ouma, in charge of finance and accounts department. He was one of the key members in Mwonya’s kitchen cabinet that cruised activities at the university. Ruth Aura was appointed courtesy of Mwonya acting director, directorate of legal affairs. Her future also is on a cliffhanger.
Mwonya also controlled cronies to oversee the procurement department tender awards, purchasing and
stock control. Sources say Omolo was close to Mwonya, and hence his office developed strategies for the mobilization of funds both locally and internationally. The budget of Omolo’s office was for publicity and branding, marketing and
management of income.
