Bomet governor Hillary Barchok recent cabinet reshuffle was aimed at laying strategies to defend the seat he inherited from Joyce Laboso last year. Barchok who initially claimed he would not run for governorship 2022 has set his eyes on the plum job and has started establishing networks within the county. His target has been consolidating areas perceived to be his strongholds as he brings on his side regions that will not produce a candidate for the seat in 2022. Barchok has also been seen as being sympathetic to William Ruto. He came out openly to oppose former governor Isaac Ruto’s pre-BBI meeting in the region. The meeting was to organize for a major rally in Nakuru that ended up being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Public health chief officer Philemon Ruto who has openly stated he will not back Barchok 2022 was sacked and replaced by Zeddy Chumo. Although the governor said the sacking was to enhance service delivery, many read politics in the move.
Richard Sigei to win votes in his home turf was appointed to be in charge of the influential newly created department of co-operatives and enterprise development now under the ministry of agriculture. Sigei was based at the department of environment before his latest appointed. He has been replaced at the environment by Alex Chirchir, another key player in Barchok re-election 2022. Chirchir was based at influential agriculture department. Job Towet alias JT is now in-charge of agriculture, livestock and fisheries department. JT’s position at youth and sports is now in hands of Nicholas Kerich another face to bring the influential youth vote in Barchokcamp. Erick Ngetich is now the chief officer roads department. He was formally at trade, energy, tourism and investment but has been replaced by Jackson Langat. Jayne Sigilai, ex-chief of staff was retained chief officer gender, culture and social services. David Kikwai remains now heading transport and public works while acting as chief officer department of lands, housing and urban planning. Kikwai is a key player in Governor Barchok kitchen cabinet. Sources say he played a key role in the recent reshuffle and pushed for the sacking of Philemon Ruto who he claimed was a spy in the Barchok government for opponents.
