Intense lobbying is on to replace Mohamed Hatimy who succumbed to Covid-19 in November last year. The nominated MCA was chairperson of the finance and budget committee and one of Governor Hassan Joho’s key men.
He was Mombasa ODM chairman. Sources say Governor Joho is deeply involved in who ODM will nominate. At the assembly, a number of MCAs currently not in good books with the governor are Abdalla Shebe (Jomvu Kuu), Charles Kitula (Freretown), Abrari Omar (Kongowea), Faith Mwende (Kipevu-Wiper) and Fahad Kassim (Mjambere).
They are said to be drifting towards William Ruto ahead of next year’s general elections. Nyali MP Mohamed Ali and former senator Hassan Omar at one time organised for the MCAs to visit Ruto. It is said MCA Milka Moraa (nominated) and majority leader Hamisi Musa are lobbying on who to replace Hatimy as finance committee chairman.
