Major fallout after Ruto Gusii tour

William Ruto’s visit to Nyamira county has caused anxiety in the region with sharp differences emerging among elected leaders and area residents threatening the unity of the county as candidates for the seat of presidency in 2022 jostle for support from the county voters.
During the visit, Ruto suffered a major political blow after members of the provincial administration also joined a section of notable leaders in boycotting all the three functions which he presided over in the two constituencies in the county.

Elected leaders who are opposed to the DP’s candidature for the seat of presidency snubbed his meetings, terming them as inconsequential and a waste of their time and resources.
The DP started his tour at Nyaigesa Technical Training institute in West Mugirango constituency where he laid the foundation stone for the construction of the institution before moving to Nyamira town where he officially opened the West Mugirango constituency office.
At Nyageisa, he was received by the five MPs from the county with supporters and the area members of the county assembly, Laban Masira, who was only recognised by being introduced and not given chance to talk which did not go down well with his supporters .
Chiefs, their assistants, deputy county commissioners and commissioners kept off Ruto’s functions, a clear indication that he had no blessings from the government over the seat he is eyeing or there was unseen hand which using the provincial administration to undermine his candidature.

Okong’o Omogeni

Other leaders who also snubbed Ruto’s function were Nyamira governor John Nyagarama, his deputy Amos Nyaribo, Senator Okongo Omogeni, the speaker of the assembly Moffat Teya and a host of members of the county assembly save for the three MCAs Charles Barongo (Bomwagamo), Duke Omoti (Kiabonyoru) and George Mosiori (nominee).
The Nyamira legislators who accompanied the DP are Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Ben Momanyi (Borabu), Shadrak Mose (Kitutu Masaba), Vincent Kemosi (West Mugirango) and Jerusa Momanyi (women rep).
On sensing the absence of the provincial administration Kemosi and Mose took issue with the county commissioner Amos Mariba whom they accused of being used by certain powerful individuals in the government to undermine Ruto’s activities in the county but we could not establish who these individuals are.
The two threatened to mobilise the county residents to reject the commissioner and his team by not attending their functions and not working with them in all aspects of life to accelerate development in the region collectively.
“If the commissioner instructs his juniors not to attend our meeting and those attended by the deputy president, then how does he expect us to work with him?” Kemosi bitterly asked.
When Ruto was opening the West Mugirango constituency office which is 10 metres from the county commissioner’s office, the commissioner Mariba was busy attending clients in his office, a situation which raised a lot of concern from members of the public but his relationship with the DP.

South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro who accompanied the deputy president told the government at Nyamira sports ground in Borabu constituency which was the last function in Nyamira county before flying to Kisii county that denying Ruto security would not stop his grand match to state house.
Osoro told the state that even if they withdrew the entire security of Ruto, Kenyans would decide the next president of Kenya and give him security.
He said that the current wars which Ruto was being fought with by the same government agencies he was serving were healthy as they were testing whether he was up to the task or not.
Nakuru West MP Samwel Arama who comes from Nyamira county and Kisii senator Sam Ongeri have dismissed Ruto’s visit to Nyamira and Kisii counties.
Talking to Weekly Citizen, Arama told the five MPs from Nyamira county who hosted Ruto to prepare for their exit from politics terming them as traitors of the Abagusii community.
Arama claimed that Momanyi, Kemosi, Mose Jerusa were Ruto’s hired guns to finish Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i whom the community has endorsed for the seat of presidency.
He said that it is wrong for his colleagues to be paid money by Ruto so that they sacrifice their own brother just because of politics.
Admirers of Ruto, however, argue that he is the best bet for the top seat and that is why his political detractors and rivals are branding him corrupt and temperamental, factors which they cannot substantiate.
Political analysts also argue that Ruto cannot be ignored when it comes to sharing of the Kisii votes since history indicates the community has never voted as a bloc.
However, the five MPs from the region have vowed that they are prepared to lose their seats in the next general elections as the cost of supporting Ruto for the presidency.
The MPs at the same time, cautioned members of the Abagusii community, against voting for a different candidate other than Ruto saying that their votes will go to a waste because they are sure that Ruto will win the seat.
The legislators asserted that Ruto will win owing to his development record.
Speaking to the this writer in Nyamira town, the lawmakers said that should Ruto win the top seat, the Kisii community stands to benefit immensely because he has already accommodated it while serving as the deputy president.
Mose said that as elected leaders from the county, they would mobilise their supporters and use their resources to campaign for Ruto come the next general elections.
Mose took issue with some leaders from the community who were opposed to Ruto’s candidature and told them to start preparing for a rude shock when Ruto will be declared the next president of Kenya.
Momanyi who is elected on a Wiper Democratic Party ticket said as leaders, they have resolved to support Ruto for the seat of presidency because he has demonstrated that he can serve all Kenyans irrespective of their party affiliation.
“If supporting and campaigning for Ruto could cost our positions in the next general elections, may it be so” Nyamoko who is elected on a Jubilee ticket stated in tandem with Momanyi.
Nyamoko called upon all Kisii’s to be united and vote as a bloc for Ruto for the seat of presidency come the next general elections.
Jerusa and Kemosi asked Kenyans to elect development conscious leader to succeed Uhuru who is none other than Ruto.
