There is more than meet the eyes in the appointment of Prof Stephen Gitahi Kiama as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.Already, talk is rife, two of the candidates that emerged top are planning to move to the labour court to challenge the appointment.
The interviews were conducted by the Public Service Coimmission and the top three candidates are as follows:
- Prof Bernard Njoroge = 96%
- Prof Madara Ogot a=87.4%
- Prof Patricia Kameri Mbote = 84%
These are the true rankings and were communicated to the Cabint Secretary Prof George Magoha and the UoN Council. The PSC will stand by their rankings and interview results.
Prof Kiama didn’t feature among the top three yet he has been appointed.
Reports indicate the appointment was also done in a hurry and on Sunday in order to take advantage of the absence from the country of ODM leader Raila Odinga, who was in China, but who has thrown his weight with Prof. Njoroge.
It is said that Prof. Kiama is being pushed by the Deputy President William Ruto.
Prof Kiama also enjoyed support of Mathira mp Nderitu Gachagua an ally of Ruto.
At stake for Ruto is the control and access of the nearly sh 20b in capitation, income and research funds at the UoN.
Previously, the DP used then VC Prof Peter Mbithi who granted him juicy contracts in health insurance, AMARCO, and security, Lavington security, among other contracts.
The health contract that was given to the DP’s AMARCO had initially been given to CIC after competitive bidding but it was taken in suspicious circumstances.. CIC appealed to the Procurement Oversight Authority but the DP made sure the matter has was never heard and determined.
Raila is said to be informed about the DP’s business dealings with the UoN and actually warned him against it in Kisumu early last year at Kisumu Port function.
Raila we have information twice asked asked then VC Prof Mbithi to reinstate Prof Njoroge to his position of DVC A/F but Prof Mbithi disobeyed the order – perhaps with connivance with higher powers.
Prof Kiama was favoured by Prof Mbithi after Prof Isaac Mbeche then acting VC decided to sack and transfer a camp allied to Prof Mbithi when appointed to act for six months.Prof Kiama was Prof Mbithi student in vetinerary medicine and Mbithi has ensured that he got plum positions in quick succession at Upper Kabete where Mbithi himself came from.
These positions include Dean and Principal, as well as the Director of the Waangari Maathai Institute which attracts considerable international funding support.
Prof Kiama name also featured in missing sh 70m from UNES controversy.
Prof Kiama was appointed by Prof Mbithi to the position of DVC Administration a position which was not created procedurally as it was neither approved by PSC, the Treasury or the MoE.
