Nyali MP Mohamed Ali is being groomed by some Mombasa tycoons to contest for the governorship seat in 2022 general elections.
Ali of the Jicho Pevu fame has increasingly become vocal against alleged corrupt deals by the Joho county administration and gained admiration from residents who are unhappy with the style and management of the port city county.
It is said that even though Ali wanted to be MP for two terms before he thinks of going for another post, meetings are being held to convince him to contest the governor seat in 2022.
Some of the people pushing Ali to contest the governor are those who were initially allied to Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo. The Kisauni legislator has since defected to the Joho camp, something that has not impressed a cross-section of his supporters.
It is being felt that by joining Joho, Mbogo will be difficult to market given that he will be blamed for some of the ills taking place in the county since he is quiet about them unlike before when he was independent and would take the leadership head-on.
“So far, the only opposition in Mombasa is coming from Ali. The residents feels that he can become a better alternative after all others have been swallowed and cannot see or hear any ills,” said Amir Ahmed an ODM political activist.
There are rumours that Joho intends to anoint Likoni MP Mishi Mboko or former Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba as successor. The Joho kitchen cabinet is pushing for someone they can control when they are outside power, it is being pointed out.
But the list of those angling for the governor’s endorsement is long and they include Mvita’s Abdulswamad Nassir, Changamwe’s Omar Mwinyi, Kisauni’s Mbogo, CS Najib Balala, county speaker Kharub Ibrahim and Suleiman Shahbal.
Former county secretary Francis Thoya has already hit the ground meeting groups and opinion leaders to scheme for the governor seat after he realised he is not in the Joho lineup.
He was unceremoniously removed from his position after it emerged he was gaining popularity and would be a problem to wish away in 2022. He is said to be a popular person on the ground but analysts say, the only hurdle would be campaign resources.
