Maendeleo ya Wanawake elections were last month conducted without gathering in Nyeri Central, in fear of coronavirus pandemic. Nobody is willing to disclose where the election was held since directives of the ministry of Health demand that every person should observe social distance and the rules concerning personal hygiene against coronavirus. The lady who talked to this writer about the election lamented that the election was far much better put off to another time when they would have time enough for electing the chair of the caliber of their own choice. They further lamented that Nyeri Central is currently a developing area that needs well-educated women leadership, capable of uplifting low-level women without education or who have a low level of education. It is argued that a local market businesswoman Alice Muthoni alias Watucui, was elected the chair of Maendeleo ya Wanawake for Nyeri Central, in spite of her low level of education.

Ngunjiri Wambugu

Locally famous Watucui, luckily gained political favour from Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu who assigned her the job of intelligence gathering together with former MCA Robert Mwai. She was elected the chair ousting Emma Njoora who was formerly imposed on the BOM chair of Nyaribop Day Secondary School for one term. Njoora was imposed on Nyaribo BOM chair on grounds that she belonged to the political camp of the former Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi according to PA Joseph Waciuri. The proprietor of Siema Academy, Njoora was ousted while speculations indicated that Murugi was intending to come back to contest for Nyeri parliamentary seat for the third time. There are, however, arguments about the age difference affecting Murugi while some others would like to know if there is age limit as far as the Constitution of Kenya is concerned. The whole election exercise went as planned following prior arrangement of Kieni Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair Purity Ngunjiri, allegedly interest in Mweiga ward to oust MCA Njuguna Wanjiku, in the next 2022 general elections. The local residents in favour of business lady Purity Ngunjiri claim that MCA Njuguna Wanjiku is nowhere to be seen when they look around in need of help and a lot is left to be desired.
