Detectives in Lamu Country have arrested a senior police officer for setting free a wanted drug kingpin in the region after receiving sh50,000 bribe.
The OCS of Kizingitini police station Chief inspector Shadrack Mumo was accused of releasing a massive consignment of bhang worth millions of shillings that had been nabbed by officers on patrol.
Police sources said that the notorious drug was on a mission to transport lethal consignment by boat from Lamu Island to Siyu area in Lamu East when he was intercepted by detectives who were acting on a tip off from members of the public.
The arrest was confirmed by Lamu county police commander Muchangi Kioi who said they were interrogating the officer for more information.
Police in Lamu have been accused numerously of colluding with drug cartels by demanding bribes after which they allow drug masters to conduct their trade as they wish, one that has turned many into zombies.
According to NACADA, over 5000 youth in Lamu are hooked to drugs.
