The brouhaha over the shifting of the major matatu terminus from the lower part of Nyeri town central business district to a contested piece of land worsened after Governor Mutahi Kahiga having already carried out the ground breaking ceremony.
The county government says that the project is aimed at decongesting the town. Before, the county administration used the land as a dumpsite but the move was opposed by area residents and National Environmental Management Authority in a successful court case against the county government.
The petitioners cited negative environmental impact to the residents and lack of public participation exercise before the county turned the recreational centre into a dumpsite.
Meanwhile, the much awaited departed Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru death inquest has kicked off before Nyeri chief magistrate Wendy Kagendo. So far, several witnesses have given their evidence.
They include former personal assistant to the deceased Albert Gakuru, security man Mwangi Maina and former driver of chase car Peter Mwaniki.
Several other witnesses have been lined up to give their evidence during the seven day death inquest.
Gakuru security aide told the court that his boss, before his demise had bad blood with his friends and his two wives. “Gakuru was cautious because of controversial pending bills which he had ordered to be audited immediately after assuming the office,” Maina told the court.
The same witness told the court that Gakuru had separated with his first wife Catherine about five years before his demise, but his estranged wife only appeared in Gakuru’s campaign trials in the last electoral cycle as a public relations exercise because many of his rivals were claiming that he was unmarried and he did not have a home of his own.
Gakuru perished in fatal road carnage at Makenji area along Nyeri-Nairobi highway on Tuesday the morning November 7 2017 when his official limousine hit road guard rail which pierced through the front part of the vehicle. The governor was seated on the front seat when he met the accident. He died on the spot.
