Deputy President William Ruto is pushing for the elevation of Esther Koimett, Transport Principal Secretary as the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary to replace Henry Rotich.
The DP is convinced that Rotich’s goose is cooked and is one of the Cabinet Secretaries to be dropped in the looming reshuffle. The Treasury boss was quizzed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations four times over his role in multibillion shillings dams’ scandals. Rotich is likely to face prosecution over abuse of office.
Ruto, according to sources, is out to block current Kenya’s envoy to US, Robinson Githae from being appointed as Treasury Cabinet Secretary. He wants Koimett, a Kalenjin, to take over from Rotich as one way of assuring the Kalenjin nation that he still wields immense power.
If Uhuru fails to appoint Koimett, Ruto will suffer huge embarrassment which will expose him as a weakling in the corridors of power. In the past the DP has not been going on well with Koimett, a daughter of former powerful cabinet minister, late Nicholas Biwott over political differences.
But now the DP is ready to accommodate her as he wrestles with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi for the control of the Kalenjin votes. According to sources, the DP has discussed with President Uhuru Kenyatta the possibility of appointing Koimett as the Treasury boss. The President is not opposed to the proposal.
