William Ruto and his political nemesis Gideon Moi who is the Baringo senator are now to take their political supremacy battle to the murky waters of the Nyanza region as parties begin to align themselves via coalitions ahead of the 2022 general election.
Already, Kanu secretary general Nick Salat who is a close ally of Moi has started the process of assembling a team that will act as a party focal point in the Nyanza region. The Jubilee wing led by Ruto has also started making forays in Nyanza where Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has met a number of youths from Kisumu county in order to popularise the DP in the region. Ruto’s ally Sudi and other Tangatanga team members were recently in Siaya and Kisumu in order to propagate his agenda. The Kanu point man on the other side of the ring is businessman Fred Kowido who has already donated office space in Kisumu at the Airport View mall near the Kisumu International Airport.
Kowido who has been a Kanu member for decades said last week that they are keen on selling the party and Gideon in order to boost his presidential bid. He contested for Kisumu Town seat at the 1997 and 2002 polls on a Kanu ticket. Gideon enjoys a cordial working relationship with Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. The former ruling party has also embarked on a reorganization of its previously ignored and dormant grassroots structures in far-flung areas of Nyanza and Western in readiness for the next general election.
Sources within party headquarters have divulged that some of the targeted areas include Nyanza and Western provinces where former president Daniel Moi used to have cell systems in the name of Kanu branch and subbranch officials. Kisii and Nyamira which are considered less hostile regions will be tackled later. Party operatives from Kisumu county led by Kowido said they met Salat who is also the chairperson of the Board of the Agricultural Development Corporation where they discussed a range of issues which included revamping the outfit in the Nyanza region. Salat said they want to assemble a Kanu team in the Nyanza region as parties start building coalitions.
Kowido who was given the mandate to reorganize the party in order to revitalize it says they are rearing to move forward. The party has reorganized its structure and created the position of regional coordinators. Kowido said he will now embark on a massive membership recruitment drive ahead of the 2022 general election in addition to popularising Gideon on the ground. The official who earlier met former sub-branch and branch officials at his office said they support recent political moves by Gideon. Kowido said the wider scheme is to sell Gideon in Nyanza region as he trains his eyes on the presidency.
A former Kisumu Kanu subbranch chairman Aum Ndalo welcomed the move to revitalize the party and said they will support Gideon’s presidential bid in 2022. Kowido says that they want to revitalize Kanu so that it can revert to its former glory in the Nyanza region in order to give Gideon an easy time on the ground. The last time Kanu crowed loudly in Nyanza region was during the days of the late Ogonda Osir who took over from Ojwang Kombudo as Kisumu district Kanu branch chairman and Collins Seda as the district executive officer, Oloo Aringo and Stephen Ondiek (Siaya) Okiki Amayo and his son Lazarus Amayo together with Tom Obondo, Ray Ndong (Homa Bay), Dalmas Otieno and Oluoch Kanindo (Migori).
