A scheme has been hatched to oust the troubled Maendeleo Ya Wanawake chairlady Rahab Mwikali from the helm of the organisation following accusations of corruption and poor leadership.
Those opposing Mwikali say she has turned the women organisation into a money minting outfit that has been hijacked by top politicians against deputy president William Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambitions.
The irate members have questioned the role of former senator Zipporah Kittony into the operations of the organisation following revelations that she was aggressively fronting Baringo senator Gideon Moi within Maendeleo Ya Wanawake.
“Our sole duty is to work towards uplifting the lives of women at every level in the society and largely those at the grassroots level to ensure they are socially, economically and politically empowered but not to take political sides,’’ said chairlady of Nairobi chapter Betty Miandaizi.
The concerned members have expressed their worries that the organisation risked being sidelined by the non-governmental organisation board and a host of other international bodies not impressed by how politics is taking centrestage at the umbrella body courtesy of Mwikali.
The organisation boasts of a nationwide network of over 4 million members with 25,000 affiliate groups and was first registered in 1952 to deal with unique challenges faced by members both socially, economically at politically.
MYWO, during its early years, was at one point taken over by then ruling Kanu party following its massive grassroots influence and as a result, became chief beneficiary of the government of the day.
The organisation’s darling with the ruling party was met with numerous goodies that came in form of vehicles and plots as a reward for the good service done for Kanu.
However, the choice to become Kanu mouthpiece was followed by bitter consequences when development partners declined to offer support it.
It is against this background that members are secretly planning a countrywide demonstration aimed at ejecting Mwikali from the office after several attempts including, through election thwarted by the chairlady and her bankrollers.
Members are worried that the umbrella group may attract financial and other aid punishment from development partners who are not willing to associate their support with politics.
Mwikali has been accused of infiltrating the family of Uhuru Kenyatta, the family of Raila Odinga and top officers at the antigraft bodies to loot the women’s kitty.
Weekly Citizen has established that the besieged chairlady turned into an overnight tycoon immediately she took over from Rukia Subow who together with Lucy Nyoroka was armtwisted to step down in Mwikali’s favour at the last minute following dark boardroom deals.
Our source said Mwikali did not stay long at the helm of the organisation before she constructed a palatial home at her Kitui village and that she is currently engaged in high end real estate business spread across Nairobi, Machakos and Mombasa.
Those who are agitating for a new face in the office have further accused Mwikali of letting loose her financial muscle in a divide and rule tactics.
She has reportedly managed to divide members along tribal lines through one Kawera who is charged with dishing out handouts to her supporters and unleashing goons on those opposing stands taken by the chairlady.
Kawera has left many questioning her source of wealth going by the fact that she was a househelp late tycoon Gerishon Kirima before her overnight financial leap.
Snail pace operations surrounding investigations against Mwikali who was accused of abuse of office can largely be attributed to how she has used her financial decisions to influence decisions made by investigators.
This is coupled with the fact that the chairlady has been overheard on severall occasions boasting of protection from the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Ida Odinga.
Members of the organisation have now warned Mrs Uhuru and Mrs Raila against their further association with the troubled Mwikali who is using the face of the two prominent families to coerce members and dupe international partners.
A number of happenings at the women’s organisation give a highlight on how 2022 succession politics is increasingly taking centrestage at the women’s organisation.
Recently cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed was left confused when she found herself at the centre of a war pitting Ruto and Gideon when she presided over a Maendeleo Ya Wanawake meeting that turned a battle ground for rival groups supporting the two leaders.
The meeting held at the organisation’s head office in the city centre degenerated into a shouting match between members supporting the DP and those leaning towards the senator.
The troubled national chairlady secretly hosted the meeting against the same court order which had earlier blocked a similar gathering at the Kasarani Stadium.
