There is a political buzz in Narok county, one year to 2022 general elections with gubernatorial aspirants scheming to succeed Governor Samuel Tunai who is serving his second and final term.
Recently, William Ruto came under sharp criticism over allegations that he has been planting candidates for the top county jobs in Maasailand in what observers say may boomerang on his wider scheme to fortify his support base in his Rift Valley backyard.

Gabriel Koshal Tongoyo

Already, murmurs are rife in Narok county that the DP has been grooming youthful Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo to succeed the incumbent, Tunai.

Tunai has also been caught in succession confusion and is said to be misleading the DP.
In the battle of titans are two brothers from the Sunkuli family who have declared interest in the governor position.
Last week, over 200 elders from across Narok endorsed Devolution principal secretary Charles Sunkuli for the seat much to the chagrin of his brother, Andrew.
Supporters of the Nairobi businessman, in a quick rejoinder dismissed the endorsement of the PS by elders as inconsequential.

Charles Sunkuli

The representative of the larger Sunkuli family, Douglas, said elders have held meetings to discuss the Tunai succession since last year and chart the way forward.
According to Douglas, who is a cousin of the three Sunkuli brothers, the family’s agreement was that Andrew goes for the gubernatorial seat while the PS is being fronted for the Kilgoris parliamentary seat.
Andrew and his elder brother Julius contested the 2013 Narok senate seat but lost to Stephen ole Ntutu. Julius was
Internal Security minister in the 1990s and Kilgoris MP between 1997 to 2002 and is seeking the same position in 2022.
Surprisingly it is said, Julius also want to be Kilgoris MP 2022 and land a cabinet slot.
Andrew, is a front runner and has not declared which party he will run on.Sources in the county aver that the DP is divided on who to support.
What has elicited mixed reactions is the plot by DP Ruto to front for Tongoyo.
The youthful MP’s desire received a major boost last year when Ruto, while unveiling a school bus at Sekenani Boarding Primary
School in Narok West subcounty, expressed his confidence in the legislator.
As if to flatter the area residents, Ruto heaped praise on the Chama Cha Mashinani lawmaker whom he described as a unifier, team player and development conscious, adding he had all along been supportive of the Jubilee leadership.
The Tongoyo-Ruto alliance has however elicited disquiet of monumental proportions with rival contenders rubbishing the much-touted development record.
The MP’s predecessor, Labour chief administrative secretary Patrick Ole Ntutu has come out with guns blazing, dismissing the development talk as child’s play when compared to his tenure. Ole Ntutu is allied to Ruto but does not get on well with Tunai.
Ntutu who lost to Tongoyo in 2017, is set to face Tongoyo, former PS Joseph Tiampati, the Sunkuli brothers, Narok senator Ledama ole Kina, woman representative Soipan Kudate and Narok South MP Korei ole Lemein among others.
Like the larger Maasailand, clannism and tribe is expected to feature largely in the crowded gubernatorial race in Narok.

Patrick Ole Ntutu

Last year, the DP had also endorsed ole Ntutu as the next Narok governor. Speaking during the burial of the CAS’s mother, the DP urged Narok residents to elect Ntutu as their governor come 2022.
The DP urged members of the public to calculate their allegiances reminding them
he had reached out to past rivals, Joseph ole Musuni and Joseph Konchella offered them national roles after defeats in the 2013 general election.
According to Douglas, Andrew performed well during the Narok senate contest and established networks to be in the governor bid.
On the other hand, Charles hosted elders at his Olpisiyai home in Trans Mara where the old men said the PS has experience in management, having served several ministries at national level.
The entry of Andrew has seen the race a horse one between him and Ntutu.
What complicates matters is the fact Andrew is close to president Uhuru Kenyatta,ODM leader Raila Odinga and Ruto.
For now, with the DP having abamdoned Tongoyo, the battle between Andrew and
Ntutu has shifted to Kipsigis vote block in Narok county.
Sources say,,Ruto is testing waters in Narok politics by fronting various faces to
establish who is popular.First was mp Tongoyo who was dismissed, then Ntutu
factor that has forced the DP think twice due to the cold receptiion received.
Aware the two DP projects are not seriously taken,Charles wants the Dp endorsment hence his latest moves.
