The eyewitness at Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru and the Nakuru chopper crash accidents, Dennis Muigai Ngengi’ past history has been laid bare.
A shocking revelation is contained in a memo signed by P Ndunda who is the principal Criminal Registrar addressed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations dated November 12 2017 and addressed to DCI in reference to a summary of cases of Ngengi.
According to police sources, Ngengi was arrested in in Ruiru, Kiambu county last week by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and taken to Nairobi for questioning. Ngengi who has denied being at the Nakuru crash caught the people’s attention after he gave an account of Gakuru’s Kabati Trading Centre accident in which the former governor perished.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said that a probe had been launched. He said that they were looking into whether he was a police officer. “It is said that there is an individual who appeared in both accident scenes. It is claimed that he is a police officer. I will find out if it is true he is an officer or not. If yes, then I will be interested in knowing what he was doing at those two scenes,” the IG said.

The memo reads in part: “The above named person is a suspect held at Special Crime Investigations Unit after he appeared as a eyewitness in two high profile accidents in Muranga and Nakuru counties. After fingerprint forensic analysis, the suspect has eight previous convictions all in different names as indicated below”.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the con eyewitness was arrested in 2014 in Diani and charged at Kwale Law Court for impersonating a Kenya Airforce officer. Ngengi jumped bail and an arrest warrant was issued against him.
Family sources last week disclosed that Muigai is a habitual liar, who is thrilled by the attention he generates. A sister and a former wife have confirmed to police that the man’s name is Karanja, not Daniel Ngengi Muigai as he alleged.
In statements to police, the pair described Karanja as a “pathological liar who masquerades as a military officer or police officers attached to the President Escort”. His sister Nancy Wanja told police Karanja is a Standard Seven dropout. She said Karanja has never been enlisted, either as a police officer or a soldier.
Damaris Karuitha, Karanja’s estranged wife, told officers from the DCI she was all along convinced that he was a security officer attached to State House. She had on several occasions seen images of a man who closely resembles Karanja seated behind the President during state functions.
On several occasions when Karanja visited her at her Nairobi home, he would receive calls from a number saved on his phone as HE (His Excellency) and he would tell her he was speaking to Uhuru on the phone.
