Intense lobbying is on to fill the position of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology vice chancellor. Activist Okiya Omutata is said have been hired by late Fredrick Otieno to stop the recruitment process and subsequently the process was stopped. By then the late Prof Otieno was of the argument that a section of of the staff were out to have him out of office.
The then VC did not want to go directly to court to counter the process and hence
decided to use Omutata. The then Education CS was Fred Matiang’i.
Weekly Citizen has information that by then Matiang’i was favouring Joseph Bosire, a fellow Kisii to head the university. Bosire was even appointed acting VC by Matiang’i. Bosire after the acting period returned to to his base as the deputy VC
at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology. He has been
pushing using Matiang’i now at Internal ministry to prevail upon powerful forces to land the slot.

Omtata’s court case has been dismissed by Employment and Labour Relations Court judge Stephen Radido one of the level headed judges according to the lawyers well conversant with labour related cases. Omtatah’s concern was that public service
commission was influenced by two then university council members appointed on the
interview panel. The then council chairman Jeremy Bundi and member Samson
Muchelule were on the panel. Bosire emerged top followed by Sibikha Makhanu and Peter Mburugu. The question is, will Prof Magoha appoint the new VC as per PSC’s last results or will a new interview be carried out?
One camp wants new interviews done as the prior one was grossly interfered with. The current acting VC is Solomon Shibairo.

However another camp want the council and CS use the last interviews results. Majority of council members want fresh process after learning of under deals in the previous one. The university has a new council appointed by Magoha to foresee the process.
It is infact said that Magoha himself will also prefer new interview to push for his favoured face as VC. James Mutua heads the council that consists of Gachu Kiragu,
Stephen Mutoro, Peter Ogango and Ahmed Diriye.

The acting VC Shibairo was poached from Kibabii University. Sources say Magoha
is pushing for new interviews to have a relative from Siaya be VC. The CS is favouring a kin of the late Bethuel Ogot to head the Kakamega-based rain forest higher institution.
Acting deputy VCs also want new interviews.
