A university lecturer has declared interest for Kericho county gubernatorial seat. Eric Mutai is among many who are keen to take over from Governor Paul Chepkwony who is said to be retiring from politics in 2022 after serving two terms. Mutai, a resident of Rungut in Bureti subcounty went to Litein Boys’ before proceeding to Maseno University for his first degree in Literature, Media and Communication.
The youthful Mutai after graduating in Maseno secured admission for his Masters in Education at Kabianga University. Among those likely to compete with Mutai includes Fred Kirui who lost to Chepkwony in the last elections. Energy cabinet secretary Charles Keter is yet to declare interest for the seat. If CS Keter decides as he is under pressure to do so, it will be his seat for taking. Mutai went to Rungut Primary in 1980s before joining Litein Boys High school an issue that will give him strong support from the subcounty that has over 80,000 registered voters. In a situation where Mutai could team the two Kipkelion subcounties, then it will not be easy to defeat his political line up. The only competitor for Mutai is Keter who has a network in all parts of the county but Mutai’s advantage is that he will be banking on the youth who are the majority voters. Mutai disclosed that he intends to establish Saccos to empower residents of Kericho county. He said that leadership requires young people who are accessible and not dictators who have been in power for ages.
He further pointed out that electing established people will only recognise those established and the poor who are the majority in society will continue to languish in poverty. He said he believes in a fair government where executive seats and top county seats are distributed fairly for the sake of sharing resources equitably. The soft spoken 36-year-old Mutai disclosed that it is too early to to reveal his running mate saying the only seat that is known to the public is the senate seat. Keter who was a resident of Belgut has a new home in Kipkelion and if indeed he will contest for the top county seat, then Mutai has to expand his network since Keter will get sizeable voters in two sub counties. The university don is currently the only aspirant for the top county seat in Bureti subcounty, an issue that will encourage him as he pursues his political ambition to become Kericho governor in 2022.
